weights and measures in the Indies

Libro 4, Titulo 18, Ley XXII.

Book 4, Title 18, Law 22
Phillip II in Lisbon on the third of December 1581, and on the first of December 1573.

Having recognized that the peacemakers, and the inhabitants of those parts of the Indies which have been pacified and populated, established weights and measures at their discretion, and the differences between one and another resulted in many lawsuits and dissension: and that it is appropriate, that all trade and dealing be with fair and equal weights and measures, we order and command, that the measure of Toledo and the vara of Castile are to be used, observing the laws of this our kingdom of Castile, and which shall seem useful, and convenient to the viceroys and judges, without injury to parties, and with regulation of rights, have royal weights made, to which sellers may have recourse, and buyers at their will, and weigh what they wish.
