An index prepared by the Access to Medicine Foundation, ranking large pharmaceutical companies in terms of their “efforts to improve global access to medicines,” essentially, to make medicines available to the poorer citizens of the poorer nations. The Index first appeared in 2008, ranking 20 companies, with GlaxoSmithKline in the number 1 position. The Foundation is well-respected and supported by such funders as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The methodology is currently based on 8 criteria, including R&D, philanthropy and patenting. It is explained in detail at www.atmindex.org/research_and_assessment/method
The most current ranking can be found at the Foundation's website, www.atmindex.org.
