Happy Planet Index

An index complied irregularly by the New Economic Foundation. The goal of the index is to rank nations by “the relative efficiency with which nations convert the planet’s natural resources into long and happy lives for their citizens.” A nation’s score is computed from available data on three factors: life expectancy, life satisfaction and ecological footprint. In the most recent version, Costa Rica was at the top of the list. Between 1990 and 2005, China, India and the USA all saw their scores fall.
