This sequence of units has two examples of words expressing a certain ratio: The quarta represents 1:4, a quarter of an alqueres. Onça, from the Latin uncia, “ounce,” is another such word, originally representing a 1:12 ratio, established by the ancient Roman uncia:libra (ounce to pound) ratio as in the English troy pound, and later a 1:16 ratio, as in the pound avoirdupois.

Most values from UN 1966.
