megaliter: mega- (an SI prefix meaning 1 million) + liter. Used without a period. A symbol in SI, the International System of Units.

The symbol L for liter was adopted in the United States (as an alternative to “l”) to avoid confusion between the numeral “1” and the lowercase letter “l”, since these two characters are identical or very similar in many fonts, especially in typewriting. The CGPM  approved “L”as an alternative symbol in 1979 (Resolution 6). Thus an alternative symbol for megaliter, Ml, is also current and approved.
