In Portugal, at least as early as the 16th – 19th centuries, a unit of liquid capacity used for wine, varying locally from 840 to 996 liters. See the range of values in the District of Lisbon in the 19th centurychart symbol .

[Tonel] Medida usada antiguamente para regular la capacidad de una embarcacion : era algo mayor que la tonelada, pues diez TONELES hacian doce toneladas.

Measure formerly used to regulate the capacity of a vessel : It was slightly larger than a tonelada because ten tonels made twelve toneladas.
